Turkish
Minor in the College of Liberal Arts
As political and economic issues become increasingly international in scope, there is a growing need for Americans to be proficient in world languages.
The University of Texas at Austin offers one of the most developed Turkish language programs in the U.S. The Turkish minor emphasizes the acquisition of the Turkish language and offers students opportunities to learn about Turkish culture, history and politics. UT-Austin’s full-campus exchange program with Bosphorus University in Istanbul, as well as the College of Engineering’s exchange program with Middle East Technical University in Ankara, Turkey, allows UT undergraduate and graduate students to take a variety of courses on Turkey, the Ottoman Empire, the Middle East and Central Asia via study abroad and receive course credit toward their UT degrees. Undergraduate and graduate students who wish to concentrate on Turkish Studies have available on campus a number of expert faculty and a first rate research library, as well as Turkish publication series and special Turkish events. The Center for Middle Eastern Studies periodically invites Turkish scholars to campus to conduct research and hold lectures/seminars in their fields of specialization. As Turkish is on the list of languages deemed “critical” by the U.S. government, UT students’ language study and research is often supported by generous federal scholarships and fellowships.
