Minor in the College of Fine Arts

The studio art minor is for ambitious and focused non-Fine Arts students interested in the visual arts.

How to Declare

Students can apply via the minor application portal, when applications are open annually from August 15 - October 1. No applications can or will be accepted outside of that window. Please note that the department is limited in the number of applications it can accept each year.

Additional notes about the minor:

  • Courses must be taken in-residence
  • You must be on the 2018–2020 or a subsequent academic catalog in order to apply to and pursue the Studio Art minor.
  • You must have a minimum 3.0 GPA in order to apply to the Studio Art minor.
  • You must have completed at least 30 hours of coursework, but no more than 90 hours of coursework in order to apply to the Studio Art minor. This total is calculated at the time you apply and includes Transfer and Credit By Exam credit.
  • A Statement of Purpose is required in order to apply to the Studio Art minor. This statement is reviewed by Studio Art faculty. If you meet the other application requirements, you will be contacted to submit your Statement of Purpose.
  • A portfolio is not required to apply.

Required Courses

Fifteen (15) credit hours of Studio Art (ART) coursework chosen from the following set of courses. All course are 3 credit hours, but meet for 6 hours a week. All courses, excluding ART 350, may be taken twice for credit. Not all courses are offered every semester. Students officially pursuing the minor (with minor attached to their degree profile) are given priority registration during the initial Registration period for the courses below, excluding ART 350. All classes must be taken on the letter-grade basis. Student must earn a combined grade point average of at least 2.50 in minor coursework.

  • Art 352C - Painting for Non-Majors
  • Art 352D - Drawing for Non-Majors
  • Art 352E - Figure-Drawing for Non-Majors
  • Art 352F - Print for Non-Majors
  • Art 352G - Sculpture for Non-Majors
  • Art 352K - Transmedia for Non-Majors
  • Art 352J - Photography for Non-Majors
  • Art 350 - Philosophy/Theory/Criticism
