Social work students are rumored to be the most passionate and social justice-minded students on the UT Austin campus.

The Steve Hicks School of Social Work combines a liberal arts education with social work classes to prepare students for a unique profession devoted to helping people. Social work students serve individuals, families, groups, organizations and communities by improving the way they function within their environment. Students also work to create social change in the larger community. The Social Work Minor gives students a foundational understanding of the profession and encourages a social work framework that can be applied to a variety of professions and educational pursuits.

All interested students must apply for admission to the minor.

To be eligible, students must satisfy the following requirements:

  • Minimum UT GPA of 2.0

Required Courses

A Social Work Minor requires completion of 15 semester hours, six of which must be upper-division. All course in the Social Work minor must be taken on a letter grade basis and students must earn a minimum grade of a C.

  • S W 310 – Introduction to Social Work and Social Welfare
  • S W 312 – Generalist Social Work Practice
  • S W 325 – Foundations of Social Justice
  • Two additional courses from S W 360K numbered topic courses
