Minor Materials Science And Engineering

The Texas Materials Institute (TMI) serves as a virtual Materials Science and Engineering department by coordinating the undergraduate minor and the graduate program (MS and Ph.D. degrees) in Materials Science and Engineering.

In addition, TMI provides the advanced instrumentation necessary to conduct modern materials research, and promotes interdisciplinary research in materials science and engineering.

The minor in Materials Science and Engineering is available to students who want to enhance their options by combining knowledge of their major with knowledge about materials, improve their marketability to employers, or are considering graduate school in a materials-related field.

How to Declare

To apply for the minor, students must meet the following requirements:

  • The minor must be completed in conjunction with a degree in one of the five supported majors. (Chemistry (B.S.), Physics, Aerospace Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering)
  • Students must have completed M 408C, M 408D, M427J, CH 301, PHY 303K and PHY 303L, or equivalent and all with a grade of C- or higher
  • Students are encouraged to apply after they have completed 30 hours but at least 3 semesters before their intended graduation
Applications will be reviewed by the MS&E minor faculty advisor and rendered in time for fall and spring course enrollments.
