Major Uteach Dance

UTeach Dance integrates advanced pedagogy in dance, leading to teacher certification with the professional artistic training and performance opportunities of the B.F.A. in Dance.

Students train in daily technique classes in ballet and contemporary dance forms, while also enjoying a curriculum that consists of practical and theoretical studies in performance, choreography and related dance studies. Students perform and participate regularly in the department’s award-winning dance company, Dance Repertory Theatre.

Students interested in UTeach Dance are invited to apply to the certification program during their sophomore year of study. Applicants should apply for the B.F.A. in Dance and may declare their interest to pursue the certification program during their first year of study.

All applicants must also submit College of Fine Arts Application and Prescreen Materials. Select applicants may be invited to attend an in-person or virtual callback interview/audition. The portal to submit a College of Fine Arts application will be accessible via the applicant’s MyStatus portal after submitting the Common Application.

Applicants should apply for the B.F.A. in Dance and may declare their interest to pursue the certification program during their first year of study.

Required Courses

The professional development sequence leading to Texas state teacher certification for Dance grades 6-12 is a total of twenty-four (24) semester hours and incorporates extensive field experiences, including a semester of internship and a semester of student teaching. Our dance certification program is grounded in holistic and research-based best practices in teaching dance that facilitate skill development, dance-making and literacy as well as history and legacy.
