Sport Management
Major in the College of Education
The sport management major in the College of Education is the business-side of sport and entertainment and involves everything that goes on behind-the-scenes in these industries.
The sport management major prepares students for careers in the sport and entertainment industries such as: intercollegiate athletics administration, facility management, professional sports administration and sports agents, the sporting goods industry, private/public sport clubs, resorts, and event management. In addition to the required courses, students must complete a semester-long internship. Many students choose to continue their education through graduate studies in sport management, law, or business. All students interested in the sport management program must complete specific prerequisites and a separate application for admission to the major.

How to Declare
ShowUndergraduates interested in sport management will enter the College of Education as a physical culture and sports major. After completing the prerequisite courses, students may apply to the sport management program. Getting admitted to physical culture and sports and completing all the prerequisite classes does not guarantee you a spot in the sport management major. This major is highly competitive with an enrollment limit of 150 students.
Once a student completes all prerequisite classes, they will apply by submitting an application by the appropriate deadline. There is a December 1 deadline for spring entry and a May 1 deadline for fall entry.
In order to transfer into the College of Education, students must meet specific GPA requirements. View the Department of Kinesiology and Health Education internal transfer policy for additional information.

In addition to the internal transfer criteria, students must also complete the following prerequisite courses prior to "officially" applying to sport management:
- A UT Austin writing flag
- Three semester hours of Economics (ECO 301, ECO 304K, or ECO 304L recommended)
- KIN 312M Management of Physical Activity & Sports Programs (grade of "B-" or better required)
- KIN 347 Historical & Ethical Issues in Physical Culture & Sports (grade of "B-" or better required)
Specializations
ShowStudents are required to complete a certificate, minor, track or one of the Department of Kinesiology and Health Education's six specializations available to kinesiology and health students.

- Medical Fitness and Rehabilitation
- Strength & Conditioning Coaching
Personality
ShowStudents in sport management typically describe themselves as a having a passion for sport and entertainment and all that in entails. They are ambitious and interested in the business-side of the industry. They are highly motivated and most have goals to attend graduate school, and foresee themselves in one of the career paths mentioned above. Sport management students should also have strong organizational, time management, and interpersonal communication skills. They will need to be highly motivated individuals with the ability to work in large and small groups.
Skills
ShowStudents in this major develop keen analytical skills. They also gain the ability to gather and prepare research on current sport/entertainment venues and trends in the industry. They learn to think outside the box when it comes to marketing and promoting.
