Geological Sciences

Major in the Jackson School of Geosciences

As a discipline, geological sciences is a synthetic subject that examines the Earth through such traditional subdisciplines as geophysics, hydrogeology, paleontology, petrology, stratigraphy, and structural geology.

Geoscientists also draw upon discoveries from math, geography, archaeology, engineering and other sciences to meld an approach that is interdisciplinary, et uniquely geological. Geosciences is not just the study of rocks, but rather a whole lot more.

As a career, geologists work in the field, the lab, and with computers to seek a greater understanding of Earth. Geoscientists help protect the planet by studying it, learning from it, and predicting what the future will bring. They perform environmental assessments and study global environmental systems. They locate water, mineral, and energy resources. They predict geological disasters. And they offer advice on major development projects. As a geoscientist, you can make a huge impact on the world around you.
