UTeach Natural Sciences

Certificate in the College of Natural Sciences

UTeach Natural Sciences certifies secondary teachers (middle grades and senior grades) in math and science.

Our very first course, "step 1", puts student teams in the classroom, teaching kids. Students get lots of hands-on guidance and help from our experienced master teachers so they can decide if teaching is right for them. "Step 1" is one credit hour, plus time in the field, and it's open to all UT students. Our program is also available to everyone. Students do not have to change their current major, but instead they can enroll in the courses for certification in addition to degree requirements. A UTeach advisor is available to help students plan out each semester; or, students can switch into a teaching option degree plan. That way, all of the requirements for a bachelor's of science and certification are part of the degree. Even students already in their junior year can start the program, and finish it after graduation. For more information, current students can visit our website, or by reaching out to our Student Ambassador team if they would like to speak with a UTeach student.

Declaration Requirements

The program is open to current UT Austin undergraduates, transfer students and even degree-holders. Students do not have to be in the College of Natural Sciences to join UTeach. A 2.5 GPA is required to advance into later courses and for certification. Students may begin the program with less than a 2.5, bringing their GPA up as they progress through the program. Students with less than a 2.5 should realize that they may not be allowed to finish the program until their GPA meets the requirement. A UTeach advisor can help students with their options. Certifications Offered:

  • Composite Science (certified to teach Biology, Chemistry, Geology, and Physics)
  • Life Sciences (certified for only Biology)
  • Mathematics
  • Computer Science
  • Physical Science (Physics & Chemistry)

How to Declare

There is no application for currently-enrolled undergraduate students. If students would like to see how they can try out teaching with UTS 101 and how earning a teaching certification would work with their degree, they can schedule an appointment with a UTeach advisor.
