Scientific computation is the use of mathematical, statistical and computer-based techniques to investigate complex systems. Scientific computation has applications in science, engineering, economics, medicine, sociology, and many other disciplines. For example, scientific computation has helped us to understand the causes and effects of climate change, financial catastrophes, and the motions of stars, to optimize the performance of mechanical systems, to model the human brain, to control the spread of disease, and to develop more effective medicines.

This certificate program provides undergraduates with an opportunity to enrich their field of study, albeit biology, chemistry, physics, engineering, economics, or medicine with applied computation, ranging from the development of and analysis with algorithm, database, statistical or visualization code. This program is fulfilled with a series of computational classes, and culminated with an individual project that utilizes computation to address a scientific inquiry.

The Certificate in Scientific Computation program is open to all degree-seeking undergraduate students enrolled at the University. Applications for the Certificate in Scientific Computation are accepted on a rolling basis.

Students are encouraged to apply as early as possible so that they can be advised throughout the programs and to ensure that their independent study project idea is approved.

Students need to fulfill the prerequisite of passing a course in multivariate calculus (M 408D or M 408M) with a C- or better.

Required Courses

The Certificate in Scientific Computation is 18 semester hours of coursework, including core requirements in computer programming and upper-level mathematics, scientific computing courses, applied computing courses, and a research project.
